Canon has officially launched pre-orders for its new RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL stereoscopic lens, designed for capturing spatial video. Priced at €549 in France, this specialized lens should ship in mid-November. And as you might guess, it should be of particular interest to Apple Vision Pro users.
Canon is eyeing the geek side
Unveiled in partnership with Apple at WWDC 24 in June, this lens attaches to the camera EOS R7 from Canon, allowing 3D videos to be recorded for playback on AR/VR headsets like Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3.
After recording spatial videos with the EOS R7 equipped with this lens, users will be able to edit their recordings in Final Cut Pro on Mac and upload them directly to Vimeo. Final Cut Pro is expected to receive an update for spatial video editing support in mid-November, while Vimeo already offers a Vision Pro app with support for spatial videos. The same goes for space photos.
The RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens features a field angle similar to a person’s field of view, allowing videographers to naturally capture memorable moments. The lens is also equipped with a high-speed autofocus mechanism, allowing users of all skill levels to record stunning spatial videos.
For those who want to record spatial videos without additional equipment, iPhone 15 Pro models and all iPhone 16 models will also support this feature natively. Then, all you have to do is admire them in Apple’s headset.
