iPad mini 7 iconThe new iPad mini 7, announced this week by Apple, has a charging speed limited to 20 Watts, like its predecessor. This limitation was revealed in a regulatory document and indicates that the device takes approximately one hour to reach 70% charge and two hours to go from empty to full. While these charging times are satisfactory, they are still significantly slower than some Android competitors, such as the OnePlus Pad 2 which supports 67W fast charging.

A load always limited

A regulatory document identified by 91Mobiles explains why. While Apple doesn’t usually reveal specs like battery capacity, the new 7th generation iPad Mini stopped at 3C certification. So, this standard suggests that the Apple iPad mini (2024) A2996 will only support 20W fast charging (9VDC X 2.22A). It’s a shame, but logical given its price positioning. The iPad mini 7 will therefore take two hours to be fully charged. To go faster, you have to turn to the iPad Pro M4 which charges at 30 Watts.

Remember that Apple no longer includes a charger in the box of its iPads, so you have to buy one like the excellent Anker 30W Gan at €18 on Amazon.

Other new features of the iPad mini 7

Despite three years of waiting, the iPad mini 7 brings modest improvements over the iPad mini 6. The changes are minimal and mainly limited to the introduction of the A17 Pro chip, which enables Apple Intelligence , an AI system designed to deliver intuitive features like assisted writing, image editing and generation, content summarization and more. However, despite this new feature, the iPad mini 7 retains an unchanged design, the same battery life, and the same dimensions as its predecessor.

The device also offers slightly improved photography capabilities, with an update from Smart HDR 3 to Smart HDR 4 for slightly more detailed and natural photos, but the camera itself remains the same as the previous model. The 8.3-inch Liquid Retina screen, quality for an LCD, has not changed either.

Despite these limitations, the iPad mini 7 remains an interesting option for those looking for a compact and high-performance tablet. With improvements such as compatibility with the Apple Pencil Pro, which opens up new possibilities in terms of creativity and productivity, and the arrival of Apple Intelligence, this version stands out above all for its software performance. It will also be able to run AAA games like Resident Evil 2 Remake for example.
