LightSpeed Studios, a subsidiary of Chinese giant Tencent, announced in cooperation with Square Enix the release of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile for iOS and Android. The game will be overseen by Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida. Several test phases of the MMORPG are planned “soon” in China, followed by a global launch immediately.

A port of FINAL FANTASY XIV on mobile

Final Fantasy XIV is therefore the latest online multiplayer game to move to mobile platforms, following the trend set by games like Diablo and Monster Hunter.

The official announcement describes FF XIV Mobile as an “exciting expansion to the beloved franchise” designed to deliver “the immersive experience of the original game in a new mobile-optimized format.” Details regarding cross-progression or the inclusion of expansions are yet to be confirmed, but the game will retain iconic activities like fishing, the Triple Triad card game, and chocobo races. What good news!

In his statement, Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV, called the mobile version “the sister of Final Fantasy XIV.”

“It’s been 11 years since FFXIV 2.0: A Realm Reborn was released, and this new mobile game will be FFXIV’s sister game, aiming to recreate the greatness of the original’s story and combat mechanics on mobile devices,” Yoshida said. “Non-combat features, such as Disciples of the Land and Hand, will also be faithfully implemented and we look forward to growing alongside the passionate FFXIV community.”

Since its debut in 2013, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has seen huge success with several expansions, “Dawntrail” being the most recent. The game is celebrated for its storytelling, its homage to the legacy of Final Fantasy and its rich universe.

According to the official sheet, the mobile version promises players a deeply engaging visual experience of Eorzea, with detailed weather and schedule systems, offering over 600 unique weather conditions in different landscapes. Efforts were made to adapt character designs and player equipment for mobile. We will also find typical dynamic combat, with this tactical side which is the strength of the saga. On the other hand, no information has been shared regarding the scope of the port, we imagine that it will be limited to the “A Realm Reborn” version.

Release date

Final Fantasy XIV Mobile does not yet have a confirmed release date. However, it is expected to undergo play testing in China before a planned global rollout.

In the meantime, you can find the FF XIV companion app on PC and consoles, or fall back on all the FF available on the App Store such as FF 7 Ever Crisis or FF 8 Remastered, among others.
