Winter is approaching and with it its share of new regulations. From today until March 31, 2025, a major change awaits French drivers with the end of tolerance for certain types of tires in mountainous areas.
This evolution of the Mountain Law now imposes stricter standards for winter road safety.
A new regulation

The Mountain Law is not new. For several years, it has required motorists to equip their vehicle with winter tires or anti-slip devices in 34 French departments (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura Massif, Pyrenees and Vosges Massif).
But so far, all-season tires marked M+S (Mud and Snow) were sufficient. This flexibility completely disappears today.
The 3PMSF winter tire becomes the new benchmark
The new standard is called 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake). This acronym, represented by a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake, is not just a simple logo.
It guarantees that the tires have passed rigorous laboratory tests to prove their effectiveness on snow and ice. A major difference with the M+S which did not meet any specific performance standards.
Fines that can be expensive
The authorities are not kidding with this new regulation. A motorist caught red-handed with non-compliant tires faces a fine of 135 euros.
Even more serious, the vehicle can be immobilized immediately. A particularly problematic situation in mountainous areas, especially during the winter period.
The tire market is currently seeing tempting offers on M+S models. These promotions, seemingly attractive, are only available in regions that are not affected by harsh winters. Drivers must therefore remain vigilant and favor equipment bearing the 3PMSF marking, even if it costs a little more.
- M+S tires will be banned in mountainous areas from November 1, 2024
- Only tires bearing the 3PMSF marking will be authorized
- Failure to comply with this rule results in a fine of 135 euros and a risk of immobilization of the vehicle.
