This is a comment that we often see on support forums: Apple does not make it easy to change the primary email address of the Apple account. Good news, with the iOS 18.1 update (which is currently at the beta stage with developers and public testers), the Cupertino company makes it easier to change the email address.
Changing the main email of your Apple account becomes easier
Apple is simplifying account management with the upcoming iOS 18.1 update. Among the new features, one of the most anticipated concerns the ability to easily change the primary email address associated with the Apple account, directly from the Settings application.
This main address plays a key role: it is visible to other users during collaborations, sharing documents or even when sending calendar invitations. In a way, it represents the digital “identity card” of an Apple user. Before iOS 18.1, making such a change was complicated, requiring you to delete the old address, add the new one, and go through a verification process.
With this update, this process is simplified. Users can now change the primary address without having to delete it, while still retaining the old one to log in if needed. This represents a real gain in flexibility for those who wish to update their address without losing access to old connections.
Another very welcome new feature is the ability to change an email address ending in iCloud.com or me.com, which was not possible before. Until iOS 18.1, users were forced to keep their primary iCloud address, without the ability to delete, change or deactivate it. Now, if an iCloud address becomes inconvenient or outdated, it can be changed in its entirety, eliminating the need for aliases.
