imessage macos 11 iconThe second beta version of iOS 18.2, distributed this evening to developers, brings its share of new features. The most notable is undoubtedly the activation of RCS, the operators’ new messaging standard, for Free and Bouygues Telecom subscribers. SFR was until now the only one to offer this functionality launched with iOS 18. But Orange still seems to be lagging behind on this issue.

The RCS arrives (finally) at Free and Bouygues

With iOS 18, Apple opened the door to RCS, a protocol intended to replace good old SMS/MMS. It allows richer and more secure exchanges between iPhone and Android smartphones. But deployment is left to the discretion of each operator.

If SFR had been responsive from the release of iOS 18 (once is not usual), Free and Bouygues have only just activated RCS with beta 2 of iOS 18.2. After receiving an operator configuration update, subscribers of these two networks can benefit from acknowledgments of receipt, the sending of high quality images or even improved group conversations. Provided of course that their correspondent has also activated RCS.

But one operator is still missing: Orange. Despite the firm’s promises, no trace of RCS in this beta 2 of iOS 18.2 for its customers. A surprising delay when we know that Orange is usually at the forefront of new technologies.

Bloomberg expects a public release of iOS 18.2 in early December. Until then, Apple should offer a beta 3 which will perhaps (finally) activate RCS at Orange. Unless the incumbent operator passes on this update.

Regardless, the arrival of RCS at Free and Bouygues is excellent news for iPhone users. This will make communicating with the Android world much easier, without the limitations of SMS. We can’t wait for Orange to take action so that the shift is complete.
