Good news for iPhone and iPad users: the iOS 18.2 update, currently in developer beta, brings its share of new features. Among them, we find the overhaul of the Mail application which was promised by Apple last June during WWDC 2024. This new version offers a refreshed look as well as intelligent sorting of emails using automatic categories. But not all users will be in the same boat.

A new look for the Mail app

The first beta of iOS 18.2, released this Wednesday for developers, allows you to discover the new face of the Mail app. On the program, a revamped design which now displays profile photos and icons for each email in the inbox. But the real star of this update is the intelligent sorting of emails.

iOS 18.2: the Mail app gets a makeover with intelligent email sorting

Intelligent sorting of emails, under conditions

Thanks to data processing directly on the device, Mail will be able to automatically classify your emails into different categories:

  • Top for important messages
  • Transactions for receipts and order confirmations
  • Updates for newsletters and social media notifications
  • Promotions for advertisements and email marketing

An “All emails” view will allow you to find all of your messages classified in chronological order. Other improvements are also on the agenda, such as a better visual distinction between new emails and old ones. Apple took a lot of inspiration from Gmail on this one and that’s a good thing.

Unfortunately, these new smart sorting features won’t be available to all iOS 18.2 users. Indeed, they rely on Apple Intelligence technology which requires at least an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPad equipped with an A17 Pro or M1 chip and more recent.

No artificial intelligence in Mail in Europe for the moment

But the main obstacle for French users is that Apple Intelligence is currently not available in our region, or even in Europe. It is therefore impossible to take advantage of intelligent sorting of emails, even with a recent compatible iPhone or iPad.

We will have to wait until the official launch of Apple Intelligence on the old continent. The Cupertino company has not communicated a date for a European deployment of its AI technology, certainly time to comply with the various regulations on artificial intelligence. See you in 2025.

In the meantime, French users will still be able to benefit from the new look of the Mail app and some practical improvements. According to previous statements from Apple, the new Mail app was to be available in December but the schedule seems to be accelerating and everything seems to point to a release in November. Enough to wait before you can finally benefit from an intelligently automatically sorted mailbox!
