With iOS 18 released a few days ago, Apple brings several notable improvements to its Home application to control your home automation accessories. Here are the 5 new features to remember that will make it easier to control your connected home from your iPhone.

Hands-free unlocking to open your door

The first major new feature is the ability to unlock your front door equipped with a smart lock without even taking your iPhone out of your pocket. Simply approach the door with your iPhone 15 Pro or a newer model and it will automatically unlock securely. No more searching for keys!

Temporary access for your guests

Another handy feature: the ability to provide temporary access to your home (locks, garage doors, alarm) to your guests, up to 29 people. Ideal when you have family, friends or service providers like a babysitter. You can view their access history for 30 days. Obviously, these people must be equipped with an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Extended Matter and Thread support

iOS 18 goes further in supporting Matter and Thread home automation protocols. Matter accessories can be added directly to Home without a hub. And if you have a recent iPhone (15 Pro and later), you can control your Thread devices without a border router. This simplifies installation and streamlines control. As a reminder, the latest generation Apple TV 4Ks are also compatible with these home automation protocols.

Your robot vacuum cleaners controlled from home

Good news, you will finally be able to control your robot vacuums from the Home app, just like your other accessories. Matter-compatible ones can even be integrated into scenes and automations or be voice-activated via Siri. Connected cleaning just got easier!

Track your electricity consumption in real time

Finally, if you are a Pacific Gas and Electric Company customer in the United States, you will soon be able to track your electricity consumption and rates directly from the Home app. This will give you better control over your daily energy expenses. Hopefully, this will extend to other countries.

With these improvements focused on simplicity and control, iOS 18 marks a new step in the Apple connected home experience. Enough to make you want to take the plunge or expand your home automation installation controlled from your iPhone!

The next big step for Cupertino-made home automation could be the release of an Apple TV and HomePod boosted with Apple Intelligence to make your home not only connected but also smart.
