More than a decade ago, Foursquare was one of the applications that could be recommended, especially for people who travel. For those who don’t remember, Foursquare is an app that allows you to discover places in a city, such as restaurants, bars, etc. Users were able to identify themselves at places listed on Foursquare to leave a review or recommendation to earn points for badges. And it was possible to become the virtual “mayor” of a place, if you are the person who has done the most check-ins in this place. This fun system has allowed Foursquare to gain popularity and attract tens of millions of users around the world.

Foursquare is over!

But over time, the app has evolved. For example, its owner decided to split the activity in two by offering, on one side the Foursquare City Guide application to discover places, and another application called Swarm for for check-ins. On the other hand, while Foursquare was once considered a gem of social networks, we have heard less and less about it in recent years. And recently, the company even announced the end of the Foursquare City Guide app.
“The City Guide app will be available until December 15, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. ET. This is when you will no longer have access to connect to City Guide through your mobile device. However, you can continue to access City Guide via the web until the start of the new year 2025 (exact date to be announced). After this, the entire City Guide will no longer be available”we read in an announcement.

The company is not bankrupt

The end of the Foursquare application was decided so that the company could focus on its other app, Swarm, which will soon receive new updates. And in a series of publications on Threads, Dennis Crowley, the co-founder of Foursquare, specifies that “the Foursquare company” is doing well, with revenues of more than 100 million dollars. However, Dennis Crowley does not hide his sadness: “I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’ve been really angry the last few days about this news. I have a really good blog post somewhere in me about “the danger of falling in love with the companies you build and the products you create,” but now is not the right time to write it.” Given the popularity of this app at one time, the news also sparked quite a few reactions on the web.

  • The Foursquare City Guide app will disappear in December
  • The company made this decision to focus on its other application: Swarm
