Apple rolled out macOS 15, also known as Sequoia, last Monday. But this update seems to pose problems for several security tools developed by major players such as CrowdStrike, SentinelOne and Microsoft. Many reports on social networks and specialized forums report malfunctions.

macOS Sequoia Firewall Called Into Question

While the exact causes are still unclear, it seems that the macOS Sequoia firewall is partly responsible for these disruptions. Several experts have found that disabling the firewall solves the problems encountered with security tools. But for users who rely on this protection, this is obviously not a viable solution.

Patrick Wardle, a leading Mac and iOS security expert, points out Apple’s lack of thorough testing before rolling out updates:

As a developer of macOS security tools, it’s incredibly frustrating to have to deal with disgruntled users blaming your tools all the time, when in reality it’s Apple’s fault.

Quite annoyed, he adds:

I understand that it’s hard to develop bug-free software, but maybe if Apple spent less time and money on marketing and more time testing their software, we’d all be better off!

VPN connection issues also reported

Beyond enterprise security solutions, it appears that macOS Sequoia is also causing issues with some consumer VPNs. Several users are reporting difficulties connecting to their usual VPN since the update. However, not all services are in the same boat.

Apple has not yet officially responded to these reports. But according to CrowdStrike, the Cupertino company has internally confirmed the network problems and is working on a fix. We will therefore have to wait a little longer before enjoying all the new features of macOS Sequoia with peace of mind, while maintaining an optimal level of security.
