The very first PlayStation, also called PS1, was released in Japan in late 1994, before an international launch in 95. So you can understand that we are fast approaching the 30th anniversary of the machine that revolutionized video games with the advent of 3D.
To commemorate the event, Sony has just revealed the new retro designs of the PS5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro. They resemble the original PlayStation, with their classic gray color and old-school logo. Those in their 40s or so may have a hard time resisting these skins, as well as the new controllers. Sony did something similar in 2014 with the PS4 for the console line’s 20th anniversary.
A very neat design
As you can see, the designers have worked brilliantly on this edition that will play the nostalgia card. The new DualSense controller does not quite match the original design, but it fits perfectly with the overall aesthetic. Sony has even thought of a retro-looking cable connector housing, PlayStation-shaped cable ties and a themed vertical stand. Even the box looks like it has lived in.
There are two bundles on offer. The PS5 bundle includes the digital version of the console (so no disc drive), a standard DualSense controller, the aforementioned accessories, and additional gadgets like a sticker, poster, and, oddly enough, a PlayStation paperclip.
The PS5 Pro deal includes everything mentioned above, plus a standard controller and the DualSense Edge, the controller that usually sells for €200. The bundle also includes a retro cover for the optional disc drive and the charging stand.
Even the odd PlayStation Portal handheld hybrid is getting a thematic refresh, with its iconic grey hue. Sony fans can even get redesigned controllers without having to buy an entire console.
Launch date
Pre-orders will begin on September 26 at participating retailers and on the Sony website. These items will be released on November 21, a few weeks after the launch of the PS5 Pro. Since the Japanese manufacturer will only produce 12,300 PS5 Pro retro consoles, it is better to pre-order. Except that the price is not known. Given the price of the PS5 Pro, we can imagine a €1,000 bill… Much more than the €449 for a PS5 Slim at Amazon.
