The company justifies this as part of its strategy to continue investing in original content and maintain its leadership position in the streaming market. But what does this mean for users in Spain? For now, good news: there will be no changes here, at least for now.

Netflix increases its prices

The announcement comes after a 2024 that has been extraordinary for Netflix in financial terms. The platform managed to add 18.9 million subscribers in the last quarter of the year, thus reaching a record of 300 million users payment at a global level. In addition, the company closed the year with a net profit of 10,247 million dollars, an increase of 16% compared to the same period of the previous year. These figures not only consolidate its dominance in the sector, but also explain why the company feels confident enough to implement price increases.

In the United States, for example, the standard plan with ads will go from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, while the premium plan will reach $24.99. In Portugal, users will have to pay one euro more per month for all plans, with the premium being the most expensive, costing 17.99 euros. In Argentina, the situation is even more drastic: the basic plan will increase by 39%going from 4,299 to 5,999 pesos per month.

The last time Netflix adjusted its rates in Spain was in October 2024, along with Italy. Although this new increase does not affect Spanish users, the company’s strategy points to periodic changes in its prices, which could mean that in the not so distant future customers in our country will also have to face another increase.

In Spain prices remain the same

An important detail is that this movement coincides with a strategic decision that will mark a before and after for Netflix. The platform has announced that it will stop publishing its total number of users. According to the company, this change seeks to redirect investors’ attention towards other metrics, such as sales and profits, instead of focusing solely on subscriber volume. This will, therefore, be the last time that we officially know how many users pay to use the service.

Netflix NordVPN

Although the numbers support the success of Netflix, the price increases have generated concern among users in the affected markets. It is not the first time that the company adopts this measure, but in a context where competition continues to grow with proposals from Disney+, HBO Max and Apple TV+, some customers could reconsider their subscription.

For now, Spanish users can breathe easy. However, with Netflix’s pricing trending upwards and its constant pursuit of higher profit margins, it’s difficult to predict how long we’ll keep our rates intact. The question is not if prices will rise in Spain, but when.
