Since their launch, AirTags have become an essential accessory for travelers. Indeed, in the event of lost luggage, Apple’s location system can help you find out its precise location. And thanks to a collaboration between Apple and airlines, baggage tracking will be even easier for users of AirTags or other Bluetooth tags compatible with Apple’s Find My network.
Recently, the media mentioned a new feature, present in the beta version of iOS 18.2, which allows you to share the location of a lost AirTag with a trusted third party or with an airline. And this week, the Cupertino company said more via a press release. On the Locate application, it will be possible to generate a link that will allow you to share the location of a lost AirTag (or other compatible tag) with another person, so that they can help you in your search.
The link will display the location of on an interactive map, on a website. And that’s not all, since this new sharing system will be integrated into the customer service of certain airlines, to locate baggage in the event of a problem. Apple indicates that in the coming months, this new system will be offered by 15 airlines, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines , Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, United, Virgin Atlantic and Vueling. And the firm indicates that this list will grow over time.
Large-scale deployment
In addition to collaborating with airlines, Apple also indicates that this new system for tracking baggage will be integrated with WorldTracer, a baggage tracking system offered by the company SITA and which is operated by more than 500 airlines and on more than 2,800 airports worldwide.
“As the leading provider of end-to-end baggage management solutions, airports and airlines around the world face significant challenges as global passenger traffic is expected to double by 2040. This collaboration with Apple will enable airlines using our market-leading WorldTracer solution to implement object tracking for more efficient baggage management, which will be a significant benefit for passengers.”said Nicole Hogg, director of SITA’s Baggage division.
