Reddit Answers is the name of the chatbot currently being tested by the social network which will attempt to correct a defect that puts it in danger. What is this AI and can it be a game changer? Here’s everything you need to know.

Why is this a good idea?

According to information from BloombergReddit is looking for a way to improve its search capabilities. If the platform is a mine of information of all kinds, finding it is often akin to looking for a needle in a haystack. Thus, Internet users tend to turn to external engines, often Google, in order to find the rare gem on one of the 100,000 subreddits.

As one might imagine, while AIs such as ChatGPT and their rivals tend to summarize information directly, this could end up costing Reddit dearly in terms of traffic. And this is where Reddit Answers could make all the difference.

Quoted by the American media, Serkan Piantino, vice-president of products of the company, does not beat around the bush: “It’s clear that searching Reddit is one of the primary ways people use the internet. It’s my job and our mission to make sure that if you want to search Reddit in any format, we are the best at doing it. »

A partnership between Reddit and Google

We will have understood, this initiative can only work if this chatbot is truly up to the task and satisfies Internet users. For now, the latter is deployed to a small number of users in the United States. The idea is to make it accessible in other countries and other languages soon. As for how it works, Reddit Answers relies on AI models created internally, but also those from Google and OpenAI, according to the company.

As a reminder, Google and Reddit recently sealed a partnership. For $60 million per year, the social network shares its users’ publications with the Mountain View firm, which uses them to train its generative artificial intelligence models.

Reddit commented: “Our collaboration with Google will make it easier for people to find, discover, and engage with the content and communities on Reddit that interest them most.” To find out more about this agreement, do not hesitate to reread our previous article here.
