An unboxing video, which reportedly shows a 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the new M4 chip, has been posted on YouTube. Signed by the Russian channel Wylsacom with some 11 million subscribers, the video began to make the rounds on Reddit and X, formerly Twitter. Here’s what you need to remember.
A Mac M4 already seen
This MacBook Pro appears to be the same one spotted in photos of the box shared by the leaker ShrimpApplePro at the end of September. According to him, this device was sold at the time in a private group on Facebook.
Although it is difficult to establish the authenticity of the computer in the video, the packaging confirms the four improvements expected for the base model of the 14-inch MacBook Pro, including the standard 16 GB of RAM ( Finally) :
- M4 chip : The packaging indicates the inclusion of an M4 chip with a 10-core processor, compared to the 8-core M3 chip in the current model. A Geekbench 6 benchmark shows that the M4 chip offers up to 25% better performance than its predecessor. This matches Apple’s introduction of the M4 chip in the iPad Pro earlier this year.
- 16 GB of RAM : Consistent with rumors suggesting that 16GB of RAM could become the new minimum on future Macs, the box lists 16GB of RAM for the base model. However, it is unclear whether this is a standard configuration or a custom option available on Apple’s online store.
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports: The base model of the 14-inch MacBook Pro appears to have three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an improvement over the current two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
- Space Black color option: The packaging suggests that Space Black color could be available for the base model, a color until now reserved for high-end configurations with the M3 Pro or M3 Max chips.
Increasing performance
In addition, during the video, we see the YouTuber carrying out several benchmarks, with results much superior to the previous models, the M3. For example, it obtains 15,288 points in the multi-core CPU test (compared to 10,259 for an MBP M3) or 38,153 points in the OpenCL test (compared to 29,864 for an MBP M3). The device is even recognized as Mac16.1an identifier not yet used at Apple.
Mark Gurman said yesterday that Apple is expected to announce the new M4 Macs at the end of October, and that some models could be available for purchase as early as November 1. Just before that, a confidence from an Apple Store employee pointed in the same direction, with a release of new Apple computers in November. The formalization should take place in the coming days.
