What are the Samsung Galaxy XR like?
Samsung has already made official the Galaxy XR, its first mixed reality headset which points directly to the ground that Apple opened with the Vision Pro, but without asking for a mortgage. Visually, it is reminiscent of the Apple device, but the strategy is clear: offer many of the same functions at a much lower price.
In terms of hardware, Samsung mounts a 4K Micro-OLED display (3,552 × 3,840, ~27 million pixels), 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage and the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. It has several cameras for eye and environmental tracking, an iris reader and a set of sensors designed for immersive experiences. Yes indeed: autonomy is shortsince Samsung talks about up to 2 or 2.5 hours depending on use, and the weight is around 545 g (plus the external battery).
Where it stands out is in software: it runs on Android There are also functions designed for games, sports and creative 3D editing with Adobe support.
Price and launch: Samsung places the Galaxy XR between the Meta Quest and the Vision Pro. Starts at $1,799.99 (about half the price of the Vision Pro) and its release dates are October 21 in the US and October 22 in Korea. For the rest of the markets, there are still no dates, so, like Apple, Spain is left out. Something they agree on.
In summary: Samsung offers a very competitive alternative for those who want to try XR without paying Apple's premium; It sacrifices some autonomy and raw power in exchange for an open ecosystem and practical functions designed for everyday use. But are these devices really worth it, or is paying for one or the other a waste of money until they are more functional and go through several versions first?
