Samsung has just published an application on Google Play called Hearapy, with a very specific objective: combat motion sickness without pills or patches. The mechanism is curious: the app emits a sinusoidal tone of 100Hz at about 85 dB for 60 or 90 seconds before embarking on a trip. According to Samsung, that sound stimulates the vestibular system of the inner ear, which helps the brain process movement better and reduces nausea. The scientific basis comes from a study by the University of Nagoya, whose researchers verified that this specific frequency improves balance and that its effects can be maintained for up to two hours.
The app is very basic, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. You open, put on the headphones, you press play and you wait for the timer to end. Samsung presents it along with its Galaxy Buds 4 Proselling them as the ideal option for reproducing that tone clearly, although in practice it works with any headphone that handles low frequencies well. We have tested it with some Galaxy Buds Core and the result was positive, although we must be honest: the litmus test would be using it in a moment of real and intense dizziness, something that we have not yet been able to verify.
Does it really work or is it just marketing?
Skepticism has its place here. The Nagoya studio exists and has scientific supportbut Samsung has taken that discovery and turned it into a free app that, incidentally, helps it promote its premium headphones. It's a smart business move. Now, the relationship between sound and balance is not pseudoscience: it is documented. What deserves more caution is whether 60 seconds of tone is really enough to endure two hours of travel — larger studies would be needed to speak with more confidence.
The app is free and does not require Samsung hardware, making it accessible to anyone. It comes shortly after the company launched its browser for windowsand it's another sign that Samsung continues to explore software beyond hardware. The proposal has enough basis to try it, especially if the usual methods don't work too well for you.
