Thanks to its ability to answer questions directly, ChatGPT can divert Internet users from traditional search engines, such as Google. But the competition between OpenAI and the Mountain View firm stepped up a notch at the end of October, after the launch of ChatGPT search. Currently available to paid ChatGPT users (and those on the waitlist), ChatGPT’s new built-in search engine will be available to all users later.

“You can get quick and timely answers with links to relevant web sources, for which you previously would have had to use a search engine. The advantages of a natural language interface are thus combined with the value of sports results, news, stock prices and others”OpenAI explained in its announcement.

However, the launch of this search engine, a direct competitor to Google Search, would only be the beginning. Indeed, the next step for OpenAI could be the development of a web browser, which would compete with Google Chrome, and which would integrate the ChatGPT search engine by default.

A browser for ChatGPT?

In a recently published article, Business Insider relays information shared by the site The Information according to which OpenAI could consider launching its own web browser. However, for the moment it would only be an idea. Alternatively, OpenAI is also reportedly considering launching a product that will allow websites and apps to integrate its search function onto their products.

The idea would be to offer a sort of ChatGPT plugin to websites that would allow visitors to ask questions and get answers from the AI based on the site’s content. OpenAI has already spoken with players in the travel sectors, resellers, etc.

For the moment, this information should be treated with caution, given that it does not come from an official source. But in any case, the rumor is circulating that, for its part, Google risks seeing its search engine weakened in the United States. As a reminder, he lost his antitrust lawsuit. And if justice has yet to rule on measures against Google, the American government has officially recommended forcing the sale of the Chrome browser by Google.

  • OpenAI already offers a search engine integrated into ChatGPT that competes with Google Search
  • But the company could also launch its own browser
  • However, for now, this is just an idea.
