Yesterday afternoon, Apple presented the new and redesigned Mac mini with the powerful M4 chip. Although the announcement, through a press release and its website, focused on the advances in performance and efficiency of the small equipment, there are key aspects that went unnoticed and that we detail in this post. It’s going to surprise you.
With the recent launch of Mac mini with M4 chipApple reached a milestone in its environmental goals: this is its first Mac that has been classified as “carbon neutral.”
New Mac mini: smaller and more powerful
Apple has reiterated its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain by 2030, and the Mac mini with M4 marks an important step in this direction. This device uses more than 50% of recycled materialsincluding 100% recycled aluminum in its casing, so-called “rare earth” elements in its magnets and a recycled gold coating on the circuit boards.
Additionally, all of the electricity used to manufacture the Mac mini comes from renewable sources, underscoring Apple’s goal of minimizing its carbon footprint. To make matters worse, 50% of the total weight of Mac minis is transported using non-air methods, such as sea freight. This measure has allowed reduce carbon footprint of the device by more than 80%.
To offset remaining emissions, Apple has chosen to apply high-quality carbon credits through the Restore Fund, a fund created to invest in reforestation projects and other carbon removal initiatives. Combining these production and transportation methods allows the company to align its practices with a greener future, and the Mac mini with M4 is proof that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with cutting-edge technology.
Apple shakes hands with sustainability
One of the least talked about but crucial changes to the new Mac mini is its thermal redesign. This model, which has reduced its size by more than two inches, is more compact but also more efficient in managing the heat generated. The new cooling architecturelocated at the foot of the device, allows air to circulate through the entire system and then be expelled, keeping the performance of the M4 and M4 Pro chip at optimal levels without compromising size.

The company has mentioned that this new Mac mini can handle intensive workloads with a unprecedented efficiency. Redesigning the thermal system is key to achieving this performance, as it optimizes airflow and helps distribute heat more evenly. Thanks to the efficiency of the new M4 chip, which incorporates a 14-core CPU and a GPU with up to 20 cores in its Pro version, graphics and processing tasks are much faster. In internal testing, the device has shown up to 2.9x faster performance in 3D rendering in Blender and up to 2x faster response time in motion graphics compared to the M2 Pro chip.
It also stands out for its packaging, which is entirely fiber and represents progress towards eliminating plastics in Apple packaging, a goal that the company hopes to achieve by 2025.
