While the launch of the HomePod mini took place in November 2020 (already!), its successor is finally close to release. Here’s a recap of what we know so far about the HomePod mini 2 with 5 potential new features.
What to expect from HomePod mini 2
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch a new HomePod mini next year. The biggest development would be the integration of a chip combining Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, designed by Apple, with support for Wi-Fi 6E. If enabled, this feature would provide faster and more stable wireless connectivity than the old Wi-Fi 4 of the current model.
Although rumors aren’t widespread about the HomePod mini 2, here are the other likely improvements:
- New chip : The current HomePod mini runs on Apple’s S5 chip, first introduced in 2019 with the Apple Watch Series 5. The next-generation model is expected to feature a more powerful “S” chip, ensuring better performance and greater energy efficiency.
- Improved audio quality : Sound improvements are expected, perhaps with new speakers or acoustic tweaks for richer, more immersive sound.
- Ultra Wideband 2 chip : A new UWB chip could improve the Handoff function, reducing latency when transferring audio content from an iPhone or iPad to the HomePod mini.
- New Colors : Apple could refresh the lineup with new color options, as has been the case with previous product updates.
A Home Automation Hub
In parallel with the next HomePod mini, Apple is also working on a home automation hub equipped with a 6-inch screen. This device could be wall-mounted or placed on a table using a built-in stand with speaker. It would work similarly to the HomePod mini while offering more advanced home control options through a touchscreen. The latter would be entitled to Apple Intelligence, unlike the HomePod mini 2.
With a potential launch in 2025, the HomePod mini 2 would however have something to convince, hoping that Apple maintains its low price!
