Since its launch, the Gemini artificial intelligence has been accessible through the main Google application, at least on iOS. However, a standalone “Google Gemini” app has just been spotted on the App Store by a Reddit user, offering more direct access to Gemini (formerly Bard), but also to advanced features like “Gemini Live”.
Google is preparing a standalone app for Gemini
With this upcoming app, users can place the Gemini icon directly on their home screen, described as “Unlock the power of Google AI on your iPhone.” Previously, users had to open the Google app and select the “Gemini” tab or use the Google home screen widget, which added customizable shortcuts for quick access to Gemini.
But apart from ergonomics, the advantage of “Google Gemini” lies above all in Gemini Live, a functionality currently not available in the search giant’s main application. A user of Reddit having a Filipino account demonstrated live voice interaction. The good news is that the service can remain active via Apple’s Live Activities, allowing users to interact with Gemini while using its phone in other ways.
Currently, this standalone application is only available in the Philippines, other countries such as France or the United States are not yet eligible. Google is discreetly testing its application, like game developers who regularly use the Philippines for their soft launch.
In the meantime, let’s remember that Gemini in the Google application for iPhone is already at the level of what we find gemini.google.comalthough the interface has not yet been updated to align with the Android version. A standalone app could allow Google to roll out updates more quickly to iOS, like what it does for Google Assistant.
