Google is changing its strategy for the annual release of the new version of Android. Finished the third trimester, we move on to the second. In addition, another update comes in the fourth quarter, a sort of big patch, approximately six months after the official launch and six months before the arrival of the next version.
Android shakes up its calendar
Google is completely changing the calendar of its Android operating system. Initially launched between the end of August and mid-October, the new version of Android will be postponed until next year. A change not so trivial as that.
From 2025, it will be published in the second quarter of the current year, between April and June. A second mid-term update is also added to the calendar. In the fourth quarter, between October and December, it will aim to make important fixes and add additional features to the OS. Without forgetting the traditional general optimization.
The objective here is to be more in line with the entire ecosystem around Android, in particular the brands that sell smartphones with the Google overlay. The biggest defect still active to date on the side of Google and Android, the deployment being complex. The same goes for distributing new APIs to developers.
Android 16, code name Baklava, will therefore be released in the second quarter of 2025. The version reserved for developers will soon be online, so that they can have the necessary time before the global launch. Android will systematically be released before its competitor iOS, which was not always the case in recent years. Apple remains on a fall release while Android moves to the summer period.
