In an interview with Bloomberg, Microsoft Gaming boss Phil Spencer discussed the future of Xbox. A future that is coming on mobile, with new partners and, above all, on a home portable console. Let’s take stock.
An Xbox version of the Switch
Phil Spencer, Branch Director Gaming from Microsoft, has confirmed the development of a portable Xbox console, although its release is not imminent. With the growing popularity of the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, Microsoft sees an opportunity in this market.
Several prototypes are being tested, but Spencer says fans will have to be patient, as this console won’t be available for several years. Unlike a hybrid device like the Switch, it could rely on cloud gaming services like Xbox Game Pass, or offer a native gaming experience.
Phil Spencer has repeatedly expressed his interest in portable consoles. This year, he outlined his vision for an upcoming Xbox handheld console. It would position itself as a direct competitor to the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, offering a seamlessly integrated Xbox ecosystem and other exclusive benefits.
In the meantime, the Xbox team is working to improve the Xbox app for the handheld consoles already available. Spencer confirmed to Bloomberg that it collaborates with companies like Valve, Steam and Lenovo to ensure that the Xbox app experience is perfectly in sync with the gaming hardware.
Xbox Store, studios and end of exclusives
In this long interview, Phil Spencer reiterated his ambition to launch the Xbox Store on iOS and Android. Although the European DMA makes this project possible, its implementation remains very complex. Xbox continues to think about the best way to implement it on mobile.
After several months of layoffs and restructuring, Spencer said Xbox plans to once again acquire studios to strengthen the brand. At the same time, he confirmed the change in strategy: Xbox will publish its exclusives on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch more and more frequently. It seems certain that the next Halo will be the first installment of the series available on PlayStation, news that could upset some fans.
