Apple’s AirTags are already extremely effective at locating lost items. But the next version could be even more so, thanks to a new component that Apple could integrate. As a reminder, the AirTag was launched in 2021 and according to rumors, the company should announce the AirTag 2 next year.
In his latest newsletter, journalist Mark Gurman (Bloomberg) shares new information on this new beacon. According to this, the AirTag should have the same design as the first version. However, Apple would offer more efficient technology.
Indeed, this would equip the AirTag 2 with the same second generation Ultra Wideband chip as the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 16. On these smartphones, this chip allows for more precise location between devices, with a better range. And on the AirTag 2, this new Ultra Wideband chip would provide a range twice as high as on the first version. This range would allow lost beacons to be more easily detectable on the Find My network, and to be found more easily.
New security measures
Otherwise, Apple would also improve the design of the AirTag so that it would be more difficult for users to remove the built-in speaker. This will deter more people from using the AirTag as a spying device, since the speaker helps alert someone who is being spied on with an AirTag without their knowledge. On the software side, Apple is already working with Google to make it possible for an Android user to be notified if they are spied on with an AirTag tag.
An even more essential accessory
Note that today, the AirTag is gradually becoming an essential accessory for travelers. Indeed, as the AirTag and other tags compatible with Apple’s Locate network make it possible to find lost luggage, the Cupertino company is collaborating with airlines so that its system can be at their customer service. As a result, it will be possible to use the location functionality, in collaboration with a company, to find baggage.
- Apple could present a new version of the AirTag in 2025
- According to Mark Gurman, journalist at Bloomberg, the new version would have the same design, but would use a second generation Ultra Wideband chip
- This would have a range three times greater than that of the first version of the AirTag
