What if AI came to profoundly change our reading habits? This is in any case the opinion of Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of the OpenAI AI research group (ChatGPT) who revealed his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). A look back at an idea that seems to inspire Amazon for its Kindle.

AI as a reading companion

The manager thus presents his conception of AI in terms of assistant during our readings:

One of my favorite applications of the Large Language Model is reading books together. I want to ask questions or hear generated discussion (NotebookLM style) while it is automatically conditioned by the surrounding content. If Amazon or whatever built a Kindle AI reader that “works,” I think it would be a huge success.

Is Amazon already working on this product?

And precisely, as our colleagues from Business Insidera job offer posted by Amazon seems to support this idea. The Tech giant says it is looking for a scientist for “Advanced AI to improve the reading experience for Kindle customers”.

The idea is to “unlock capabilities like analysis, enhancement, curation, moderation, translation, transformation and generation in books based on content structure, features, intent, synthesis and publisher details »continues Jeff Bezos’ firm.

The company sees very big and hopes “streamline the publishing lifecycle, improve digital reading, and empower book publishers to grow their business on Amazon with innovative AI tools and solutions”.

The company hopes that these technologies will, among other things, generate higher reading engagement, and thereby improve “company sales growth”. Asked about the subject, Amazon declined to comment on this information.

A concept with a future?

Under the publication of Andrej Karpathy, the CEO of Stripe, Patrick Collison, expressed his enthusiasm and judged that this idea was “awesome”. For your part, what do you think of the principle of introducing an AI assistant to e-books that would enrich the experience? Tell us in the comments.

What to remember:

  • Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI, believes that ChatGPT-style AI features should be introduced to e-readers
  • The ambition is to accompany the reading and to ask questions of this tool to go further
  • Amazon is trying to recruit scientists to work on AI products related to books
