Since ChatGPT‘s launch, one of the most popular AI chatbots, it has been improving over time. They’ve been adding new features and fine-tuning the responses it provides. Now comes a new change, which seems interesting, although it’s also likely to generate controversy. OpenAI wants ChatGPT to know everything about users from the moment they start using the service.
The new feature is the addition of a new memory function. Basically, it will record everything you do in ChatGPT. A kind of diary, to remember what questions you’ve asked, what information you’ve given, etc. The ultimate goal is to get to know the person as much as possible in order to give a more accurate answer.
ChatGPT improves memory
ChatGPT already had a memory feature, although it was limited. Now they’ve improved it so it doesn’t mix up conversations or forget older information you might have provided. Specifically, it’s the feature known as Memory. With this new version, they aim to change the way we use this service.
Let’s give a simple example. Imagine you use ChatGPT as a personal trainer to prepare for popular races, such as a half marathon or a marathon. You provide information over time, such as the pace you ran in a previous race, the days you usually train, any injuries you’ve had, and so on.
There comes a time when you want to plan a specific workout for a specific event, where you want to lower your pace, and ChatGPT could get to know you better. It could remember your history, see if you’ve had a previous injury while doing similar workouts, see if you can actually achieve that pace or not, based on what you’ve already done, etc.
Basically, it will have a better memory to provide more precise information. It will memorize everything you’ve been searching for over time, as if it were a diary. This can be useful in cases like the example we’ve given.
Privacy concerns
But of course, all of this also raises privacy concerns. Do we want an AI chat to know so much about us, to the point of remembering everything we say? It’s certainly an issue that, in many cases, will raise concerns among users, and they may want to disable it.
Luckily, if you’re worried about this, you can disable it. To do so, go to Settings in your user account, in the top right corner. Once there, go to Personalization and disable the Memory feature. You can re-enable it at any time. You can even manage those stored memories.
Keep in mind, however, that this feature is limited for now. It’s not available to all users, although it is available to Pro users. However, we hope that it will gradually be included so everyone can use it. Just as you can improve privacy when using Chrome, you can also apply it to these types of chats.
