Clearly, Disney is not giving Canal+ any favors in the field of cinema. Indeed, the big-eared firm has won the broadcast rights for the next Oscars ceremony. A true symbol in the world of the seventh art. Let’s take stock.
The Oscars exclusively on Disney+
Quoted by our colleagues Echoes, Julia Tenret, the acquisitions and programming director of Disney+, announced during a press conference given this Tuesday, December 10: “The next Oscars ceremony will be broadcast exclusively on Disney+. We will be live from the red carpet at the Dolby theater in Los Angeles on March 2 for this 97th ceremony”.
And even if this event is not a tidal wave in terms of audience (it is broadcast in the middle of the night in France), it nonetheless remains one of the most prestigious meetings of the ‘year. The latter has also been offered by Canal+ for over thirty years now, which represents a marketing asset for “the cinema channel”.
Moreover, and as the economic newspaper specifies, this announcement comes in a very particular context. Indeed, the entertainment giant announced at the beginning of November that its contract with Canal+ would end.
From then on, it is no longer possible to access the streaming platform by banking on the offers offered by the Vivendi subsidiary. Likewise, the French company can no longer broadcast new films from Disney studios six months after their release in cinemas.
Disney wants to change the media timeline
As a reminder, Disney could quadruple its investments in French cinema. The amount of financing would increase from 13 to 55 million euros per year. The ambition is to change the media timeline. The service would like to obtain a broadcast window of nine or even six months after the theatrical release, whereas it is currently seventeen months.
For players in the sector in France, this would represent a boon by diversifying sources of financing. Currently, Canal+ is the leading financier with 210 million euros annually. More information in our previous article here.
