Today’s stupidity comes to us from TikTok, where some content creators are alerting their community about the alleged theft of banking data via AirDrop on the iPhone. Obviously erroneous information which mixes disinformation and absurdity.

False false and false again

Recent TikTok videos claim that AirDrop would allow malicious individuals to steal your credit card information stored on your iPhone, including through Apple Wallet. These allegations have sparked concern among users.

However, these claims are unfounded. AirDrop does not allow unauthorized transfer of sensitive data such as credit card information. Apple has designed AirDrop with security measures to prevent such unauthorized access.

The videos in question recommend disabling AirDrop or other nonexistent settings, such as “search with other iPhones.” The creators, clearly ill-informed, mention the new functionality which allows you to share a contact card by bringing two iPhones together. In addition, since iOS 17, Apple automatically deactivates AirDrop after 10 minutes for unknown iPhones, thus making it impossible to share and therefore “steal” data. Not to mention that banking data simply cannot be shared via AirDrop.

It is important to note that spreading such baseless rumors can cause unnecessary panic. Apple regularly updates its systems to strengthen the security of its users. To ensure your security, it is recommended to keep your device updated with the latest versions of iOS and configure AirDrop to receive files only from your contacts or turn off this feature when you are not using it.

The content creators involved have already received enough publicity, so there is no need to repost their videos here. However, if you absolutely want to see them, go to the social network in question and type “AirDrop” in the search bar.

In conclusion, the claims that AirDrop would allow your credit card information to be stolen are completely false. It is always prudent to verify the veracity of information before changing your device settings or sharing unverified rumors.
