If you are one of those who have ever dreamed of disassembling your iPad and changing the battery without going through an Apple Store, you are in luck. Apple today announced the expansion of its program Self Service Repair (Self -service repair) to Various iPad modelsallowing, for the first time, users can repair with their own hands some of the most delicate components of these devices.

And we do not talk just to change a case or clean the screen, since you can replace the battery, the cargo port, the camera or even the screen.

How to repair the iPad

As of tomorrow, the service will be available for the iPad Air with M2 chip and later models, the iPad Pro with M4, the iPad Mini with chip A17 PRO and the standard iPad with chip A16. The process will be carried out through Apple official manualsoriginal pieces and specific tools, including rent kits for those who do not want to make a large investment in material that probably use only.

This program, which is not new, does come to the iPad for the first time. It was started in 2022 and Apple designed it for those users with technical knowledge who want to personally take care of the most common repairs. Today, it already covers 65 brand devicesfrom the iPhone to the MacBook Air and the Mac Studio. With this last extension, Apple reinforces its commitment to the right to repair, an increasingly demanded trend by users and regulators, especially in Europe.

And that's not all. Apple has also given more details about its original parts distributors program (Genuine Parts Distributor), which allows independent businesses to access official components for iPhone and iPad. This includes screens, batteries and cargo ports, and in Europe they can be acquired through MobileSntrix and Mobileparts.shop.

The decision to expand the program to the iPad has many implications. On the one hand, it is one more step towards sustainability by allowing it to repair it in our homes, and the number of devices that end up in the garbage for repairable failures is reduced. On the other, it puts more control over their own devices in the hands of users, something that has historically been exclusive terrain of official technical support.

Of course, you have to keep in mind that the program is not intended for anyone. Apple's repair guides are detailed, but do not replace the experience of a technician. In addition, the use of specific tools and the manipulation of delicate components such as a screen or battery requires a minimum of skill. Apple makes it clear: if you don't see yourself capable, it is best to go to professional support.

On the other hand, that the company offers tools for rent is interesting and democratizes access to repair without forcing the user to spend a fortune on technical equipment. The rent saves money and resources, in addition to reducing waste.

Repairing your iPad at home is already possible, and although not everyone will dare, the option is there. And if this trend continues to grow, perhaps in the near future the usual thing is not to take the device to the technical service, but to ask for a screwdriver and get down to work.
