If you don’t want to receive an avalanche of fines next year, you better be extra vigilant and follow the Highway Code to the letter. In an annex to the finance bill for next year, relating to Road Safety, it is specified that the number of radars on the roads of France will increase.
The increase in speed cameras in France is not gargantuan: only 4%. But it is the nature of these new types of radars that could well make drivers complain. Indeed, these new radars should be more efficient, capable of detecting speeding but much more.
Telephone while driving, not wearing a seat belt, not respecting safety distances
From next year, the government wants to punish bad performers on the road. In a few months, speed cameras will not be satisfied with penalizing speeding drivers. Indeed, many speed cameras will crack down on motorists who are on their phones while driving, who do not respect safety distances or who have the unfortunate tendency not to wear their seat belts.
In order to detect these offenses, the new radars will be boosted with artificial intelligence. As the interministerial delegate for road safety Florence Guillaume points out, the government is counting on “the appropriation of innovative technology or techniques, such as the extension of the use of artificial intelligence to improve the performance of automated control and the use of data science to develop anti-fraud tools”.
Remember that these three offenses are each punishable by a fine of 135 euros as well as a withdrawal of three points on the driving license. In addition, they are cumulative. Therefore, you may be penalized for all three offenses by the same speed camera. In the eyes of the association, 40 million motorists, “the government is planning an avalanche of PV”.
In order to set up such high-performance and intelligent radars, to install them but also to maintain existing radars, 46.3 million euros should be allocated to Road Safety.
- Starting next year, AI-boosted radars will appear on the roads of France
- They will be able to detect failure to wear a seat belt, use of a telephone while driving and failure to maintain safety distances
- These three offenses are each punishable by a fine of €135 and a withdrawal of 3 points from the driving license.
