In recent years, Samsung’s photo division has been engaged in a megapixel race. In 2019, it presented the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor, the first image sensor for smartphones with a resolution of 108 megapixels. And today, it also offers a 200 megapixel sensor, which is found on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and on certain models from other brands.
But Samsung could go even further, by developing a 500 megapixel sensor for smartphones. In any case, this is what a recent publication on X by Jukanlosreve indicates, a source which is regularly cited by the media. According to it, Samsung is developing a brand new sensor that could equip the iPhone, and that would compete with Sony’s sensors, while developing a 500 megapixel sensor for Galaxy smartphones.
What’s the point?
For the moment, caution is required, since this information does not come from an official source. But in any case, it would be logical for Samsung to seek to increase the resolution of photo sensors for smartphones. As a reminder, this type of sensor makes it possible to capture ultra-detailed images when the light is good. And in low-light environments, it can capture more light using a technology called pixel-bining, which involves combining adjacent pixels to get more light.
Furthermore, if Samsung develops a 500 megapixel sensor, it will probably not be reserved for Galaxy smartphones. Indeed, in addition to being a manufacturer of smartphones, Samsung is also a supplier of components (screens, photo sensors, etc.)
- After 108 megapixel sensors and 200 megapixel sensors, will Samsung release a 500 megapixel sensor for smartphones?
- According to a source on X, this technology is in development and could land on future Galaxy smartphones
- Sensors with a high megapixel count allow for a technique called pixel-bining that can improve the quality of photos taken in dark environments
- Samsung would also develop a new sensor for the iPhone
