Erratic behavior in iOS 18 is frustrating iPhone users by preventing changes to a photo from being saved in the eponymous app. When the issue occurs, users who attempt to save their changes are blocked by the following error message: ” An error occurred while saving this photo. Please try again later.»
The story of a (new) bug
As you will have understood, the consequence of this bug is that it is impossible to save the modifications, the only option being to press “Cancel” and ignore the modifications to exit the editing interface.
The first reports of this problem surfaced as early as September and continued despite subsequent updates, including the latest beta versions of iOS 18.2. Although the problem existed for some users before iOS 18, it has become much more common with recent software. Moreover, if the iPhone 16 are the most cited, the other models also seem affected, like our test iPhone 15 Pro. One more bug for iOS 18 after those of deleted photos or iMessage. At the end of October, iOS 18.1 fixed several issues.
Possible causes and workarounds
The exact cause of the bug remains unclear. It does not affect all users or all photos, but could be related to Live Photos or iCloud Photos. Some users have observed that all photos from a specific day are affected, which does not help to understand the reason.
Currently, there is no “clean” solution. However, duplicating the assigned image as a “still photo” saves the changes. This workaround unfortunately removes Live Photo functionality and Photo Styles.
Apple is aware of the bug and is actively working on a solution. We will update the article accordingly, either with iOS 18.1.1 or iOS 18.2 in final release.
