If you don’t know, iPadOS 18 requires at least a 7th generation iPad, which excludes all others. If the iPad 7 is not the most attractive of the range in 2024, it stands out as the only device sensitive to the checkm8 bootrom exploit and capable of running the latest iPadOS 18. It is therefore the only jailbreakable on this firmware. The iPad 6 may share the same A10 Fusion processor, but it has been excluded by Apple.

iPad (6th generation) hacked to run iPadOS 18

Never mind, Nick Chana developer from the palera1n team, associated with @mineekdevhave shared an intriguing image on X. It is an iPad 6 running on iPadOS 18.

The image shows the iPad model number A1893, confirming that this was the Wi-Fi-only iPad (6th generation), running iPadOS 18.0.

As explained, the iPad (6th generation) is therefore not compatible with iPadOS 18, but shares the same chip A10 Fusion than the 7th generation (as on the iPhone 7), there is a theoretical basis for compatibility with the latest firmware. This is what the hacker team demonstrated.

This feat is a ray of hope for customers, mainly because it hints at the possibility of expanding the list of devices that can be jailbroken on iPadOS 18, potentially via palera1n. This is also good news for the lifespan of the iPad 6.

It’s unclear what specific changes were needed to make this work, or even if the hack will be shared with users. But the guys from palera1n prove that it’s possible.

Do you think the jailbreak tool will be updated to allow installing the latest systems on older devices? Who among you is interested?
