With the release of iOS 18 last week, Apple introduced a new feature that lets you continue to play music (or any other audio) on your iPhone speakers while recording a video. A great idea for creating clips with background music, which should delight YouTubers, but especially TikTokers, Instagrammers, and others.

How to allow audio playback during video capture

Previously, in iOS 17 and below, starting a video recording would automatically pause the audio playback on your iPhone. However, iOS 18 lets you change this behavior, thanks to a new camera setting.

If you are interested, here is a little trick to enable audio playback while recording video in iOS 18:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and tap “Camera”.
  • Tap “Recording Sound”.
  • Enable the “Allow audio playback” option. By default, it seems to be enabled.

So your iPhone will no longer automatically pause audio when you start recording a video in the Camera app. Be careful though, if you play audio through your iPhone speaker while shooting, the audio will be captured in mono.

This new option offers more flexibility than the old solution of using QuickTake mode, which allowed audio playback to continue but with lower video quality. With iOS 18 and its 250 new features, however, you can now enjoy the full quality of video mode while maintaining the desired audio playback. Enough to film in 4K without any problem!

Who has been waiting for this setting for years?
