Microsoft has just announced a major new feature that should delight iPhone users with a Windows PC. While Apple reserves its AirDrop for its ecosystem, the Redmond giant finally offers a credible alternative to facilitate file sharing between the two platforms.
A simple and intuitive file sending solution
The new feature arrives via Phone Linkthe Windows application which already allows you to connect your smartphone to your PC to receive notifications and calls. The process is intended to be particularly simple: on Windows, the iPhone will appear directly in the sharing options, while on iOS, a “Link to Windows” extension will be available in the native sharing menu.
To take advantage of it, some technical prerequisites are necessary:
- An iPhone running iOS 16 or higher
- The Link to Windows application (version 1.24112.73 minimum) installed on the iPhone
- Phone Link (version 1.24112.89.0 minimum) on Windows
- Currently enrolled in the Windows Insider Program
A gradual rollout for all Windows users
Microsoft has confirmed that this feature, currently in the testing phase with Windows Insiders, will be gradually rolled out to all Windows 10 and 11 users. Users already paired will be able to activate file sharing by going to aka.ms/addAccount from their PC, while new users will be offered the option during initial setup.
As a reminder, the Link to Windows application is available for free on the App Store. This announcement is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to improve the integration of iOS devices into the Windows ecosystem, an approach that contrasts with Apple’s more closed approach.
