Nova Launcherone of the oldest and most popular Android launchers, could be about to transform into something very different from what its users know. According to strings found in the v8.6.8 beta code, the app would be preparing a new function called Nova AI: a proactive assistant that would live within the launcher itself, without the need to install any extra application. The proposal on paper sounds ambitious, but what it asks for in return raises quite a few doubts.
To work, Nova AI would need to access virtually everything on your phone: SMS messages, call history, real-time location, contacts, calendar and app usage. With that access, the assistant would promise to remind you to reply to someone, alert you before meetings or suggest what to watch at night. Useful on paper; difficult to justify when the person requesting that access is your application launcher.
What exactly would Nova AI do?
The function would include a conversational chat integrated into the home screen, accessible from the search bar or by swiping left. The examples that appear in the code are like “what is happening near me right now?” or “what should I see this afternoon?” There would also be a morning briefing with events of the day, possible agenda conflicts and notices before meetings, in addition to a kind of “inner circle” of contacts with which Nova AI would actively follow up.
The acquisition of Nova Launcher by the Swedish company Instabridge At the beginning of 2025, I already anticipated this type of movement: the new owners spoke from the beginning of finding a “sustainable business model.” This, it seems, is the answer. A mysterious function called Nova Mobilerelated to the management of a telephone line, although without further details for now.
It is worth remembering that all this comes from an analysis of the APK in beta phase, so it may change or never reach the stable version. As a striking detail, the strings also point to a new subscription layer monthly or annual call Nova Pluswhich would unlock greater limits on AI usage — something we discuss in more detail here.
Would you be willing to give your launcher access to your messages and calls in exchange for smart suggestions, or are there lines you'd rather not cross?
