Europe is establishing itself as an essential territory in the global race for artificial intelligence: world-renowned research centers, prestigious universities, regulations that emphasize ethics, etc. A particular context in which OpenAI wishes to progress by establishing its presence in the French capital.

A new location that will be added with an already fairly dense territorial network for such a young company, with eight other offices spread across America, Asia and Europe. This clearly demonstrates that the group, in full expansion, wishes to strengthen its roots in the Old Continent.

The French conquest: seducing large groups

The company, which now has 2,000 employees including 650 engineers, has already attracted two flagships of French industry. And not just any: Sanofi, one of the largest French, even world, pharmaceutical groups, and Publicis, one of the global leaders in advertising and communication.

With its 250 million active monthly users, the American group uses its chatbot on a very solid economic model. A free version, preferred by a large majority of ChatGPT users, and a premium subscription version (23 euros per month), which is attracting more and more users. For the moment, this base will not move, said OpenAI to Tech&Co and the company hopes to optimize its costs without adding advertisements to its chatbot and accelerate the path towards its break-even point thanks to these new partnerships.

Beyond assistance: towards an AI that anticipates and decides

OpenAI already has divided by nine the cost of processing its requests in just 18 monthsgoing from 36 to 4 dollars per million tokens. These are the smallest units of text used by ChatGPT to process and generate language. These are pieces of words, whole words or parts of words which serve as elementary bricks which are used to construct the text.

An optimization that has been accompanied in recent months an expansion of its range of models. From the GPT-4o mini model, designed for general public applications, to the more sophisticated o1, capable of emulating cognitive processes close to human thought, OpenAI has succeeded in innovating across the entire spectrum of uses.

The firm does not intend to stop there and projects are multiplying : a new Orion language model should arrive shortly and it is currently developing an even more ambitious model. Its code name “Operator” is already circulating in the specialized media and its description increasingly resembles that of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).

A fully autonomous modelcapable of learning user behavioral patterns to proactively provide personalized services. According to information from Bloombergit will be available from January 2025.

OpenAI therefore has its work cut out for itwhich it will now decide, in part, on French soil. An establishment which clearly confirms that our country remains attractive for AI leaders and which could, in the long term, attract others.
