The media have just published a first opinion on the new Sony console. The differences between the PS5 Pro and the PS5 are so small that disappointment predominates on the web. This is an opportunity to take stock and recall the objective of this mid-generation console.
PS5 Pro: too much waiting
The PS5 Pro is officially released this Thursday, November 7, 2024. The specialized press received it in advance and even had the right to publish a first general opinion 24 hours before. So here is a first summary on the PS5 Pro and as expected, it is not made for everyone.
The characteristics of the PS5 Pro
- 16.7 teraflops (GPU 62% more powerful than PS5)
- 2 GB more RAM
- PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution): artificial scaling technology that improves the image quality of games in real time. An equivalent of Nvidia’s DLSS.
- Boosted ray tracing
- 2 TB of storage
A general disappointment
62% more power, 2 GB of additional RAM and unprecedented uspacling technology on console. Despite these three characteristics, the PS5 Pro is far from unanimous approval at the moment. While some recognize superior quality in some image details, others clearly indicate that you have to “glue your eyes to the screen” to see the changes.
A sentence that may seem exaggerated and at the same time so telling. Yes, the PS5 Pro offers higher image quality than the PS5. The problem is the number of parameters to take into account to see this difference. In addition to the PS5 Pro at €800 (without disc drive), it is imperative to have a 4K OLED screen of at least 55 inches with all the options related to gaming. VRR, ALLM, HDMI 2.1 (120 Hz) etc. Don’t forget to play fairly close to the TV and if possible in a dark room.
The majority of testers assure that in normal conditions, that is to say 2-3 meters from its screen of 55 inches or more, it becomes difficult if not impossible to detect a concrete difference with the PS5 version on the vast majority of PS5 Pro Enhanced games (optimized for the PS5 Pro).
Who is the PS5 Pro for?
The PS5 Pro is clearly aimed at the most experienced technophiles. Gamers who, firstly, have the financial means and secondly, absolutely want the most powerful current console on the market. A player who already owns a PS5 and who doesn’t spend his time watching image comparison videos on the web has no interest in making the switch.
Despite all this media noise, we must not forget the main thing. Sony did not release a PS5 Pro for all PS5 players to check out again. As with the PS4 Pro, if 10% of PS5 players have the Pro version, then that will be a great success. Too many players talk like it’s the PS6. This mid-generation model clearly has a well-defined target.
To conclude, don’t hesitate to treat yourself if this PS5 Pro makes you want it. If you have the slightest hesitation, take your time, it’s probably because the changes haven’t impressed you enough to spend €800. Wait until the release of GTA 6 in fall 2025. Clearly the game that risks selling PS5 Pros in a year.
