Google is aware that its Chrome browser can sometimes be very resource intensive. And to remedy this, the firm has already proposed some solutions. In 2023, for example, it deployed a memory saver which makes navigation smoother by freeing up resources used by inactive tabs. This memory saver was also accompanied by a battery saver for laptops. And this week, the firm is offering improvements to these features, which will help users better manage the performance of Google Chrome on their computers.

A new button to “repair”

A new feature called Performance Detection identifies performance issues on the active tab and displays a new button next to the address bar. By clicking on it, the user accesses a mini-window which proposes a problem with the identified performance concern. In the example below, provided by Google Chrome, the browser identifies a problem playing a YouTube video and suggests closing two resource-intensive tabs to resolve the problem.

More control over memory saver

Otherwise, Google is also improving the memory saver that it launched in 2023. The operation, which consists of freeing up the resources used by inactive tabs, does not change. However, the user will have the option to choose between three options. The moderate option will disable inactive tabs taking into account the system needs. Balanced mode will also take into account the user’s habits. And an extreme mode will disable inactive tabs faster. This new setting will be found in Google Chrome’s performance settings. Otherwise, it is also possible to tell Chrome which sites should always be active and not be disabled by the memory saver.
