XD Inc took advantage of the last hours of 2024 to launch the Night Crimson update of its tactical RPG Sword of Convallaria, which, although only released in July, has already won over millions of players on PC and mobile platforms. This update enriches the game with new content, events and game mechanics. The opportunity to discover the one that smells of nostalgia.
Sword of Convallaria thinks bigger
The update expands on the Spiral of Destinies campaign, introducing innovative “wall of investigation clues” gameplay to the Waverun City narrative. Players now engage in detective-like activities intertwined with tactical combat, guided by Safiyyah, the mobile squad’s strategic leader.
Night Crimson introduces SP Characters, alternate versions of familiar characters with unique looks and combat skills. The first of these, SP Rawiyah, is available from January 3, followed by Taair on January 17. If you already own the original characters, unlocking their SP versions grants an exclusive skill, boosting the combat capabilities of both forms.
The update also brings new events starting December 20, where players can earn rewards like Secret Fates, legendary trinkets, and exclusive avatar frames. The Waverun tournament, which begins on January 3, will allow players to exchange event points for special items, improving the gaming experience.
An in-game behind-the-scenes look includes short messages from the developers hinting at future Sword of Convallaria content. Additionally, fans can enjoy a video message from Japanese voice actor Safiyyah and the new theme song, “Never Apart,” now available in a Japanese version sung by Hikasa Yoko.
A high quality RPG
For those who have not yet installed this role-playing game, here is what you need to remember.
Sword of Convallaria takes place in the year 992 of the Radiant Calendar, seven years after the War of Independence in Iria. The story focuses on Waverun City, Iria’s largest port, where prosperity and ambitions of allied nations coexist with the illegal trade of Luxite. Young members of the mobile squad, Rawiyah and Safiyyah, face a Bloody Luxite case that tests their abilities.
The game takes up the torch of the famous Japanese turn-based titles with pixel art graphics, tactical grid combat, a deep story where you play a mercenary leader in Iria and a country rich in magical resources threatened by factions exterior. As is often the case, your choices directly influence the evolution of the city and history, with many variations. Everything is sprinkled with periodic events, which sets Sword of Convallaria apart from the rest. In addition, the game can count on a magical soundtrack, composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, known for his work on Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre.
If you like tactics games, look no further. Although it has an in-game currency (typical gacha style accompanied by optional in-app purchases), XD Inc’s free game compensates by not bombarding you with ads constantly. If you take the time to dive into it, Sword of Convallaria reveals an unexpected depth, as well as very well-crafted animations. In short, very good!
