Apple has restarted its innovation machine, and this time the goal is to take iPhones to a new level of power and efficiency. The A20 chip, which will give life to the iPhone 18, will be manufactured with the new 2nm technology from TSMC, an advance that will allow more transistors to be included in a smaller space. But what does this really mean?

iPhone 18 with more battery

2nm chips are the next generation in semiconductor manufacturing, a step up from the current 3nm process used by iPhones 16. With the reduction in transistor size, the A20 chip will be able to process more information in less timeoffering greater speed and unmatched energy efficiency. This will not only improve the performance of the device but could also extend battery lifea key aspect for many users.

The increase in RAM to 12 GB is another of the most notable points of the iPhone 18. Currently, the iPhone 16 has 8 GB of RAM, which is already enough to fluently handle the most demanding applications and the multitasking ecosystem of iOS . However, with 12GB RAMthe iPhone 18 will be ready to tackle the applications of the future, such as those that require advanced artificial intelligence processing, augmented reality and more complex graphics.

This jump from 8GB to 12GB is expected to become the new standard for high-end iPhones, starting with the iPhone 17 Pro in 2025and consolidating in the iPhone 18 series in 2026. However, as noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it is likely that only the “Pro” models of the iPhone 18 will incorporate this advance, due to the cost of the new technology.

Another advance that we will see in the iPhone 18 is the change in the chip packaging method. Apple will abandon the InFo (Integrated Fan-Out) process it has been using, in favor of the WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) method. This system allows multiple chips to be integrated into a single package, which will improve communication between the CPU, GPU, RAM and other components, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning accelerators.

The switch to WMCM packaging will allow chips to work more efficiently, resulting in greater processing capacity and smoother experience for the user. This technique could also open the door to new types of hardware integration that will further improve the overall performance of the iPhone 18.

Apple will launch the iPhone 18 in 2026equipped with the 2nm A20 chip and 12GB of RAM, using advanced WMCM packaging. With this next-generation technology, Apple will maintain its leadership in the smartphone market, offering a more powerful and future-proof device.
