As of this morning, developers can start paying to display ads on the App Store in 21 new countries, including Algeria, Morocco and Turkey. This possibility was already present in seventy countries including France.
Four types of advertisements
There exists four formats search ads visible in the App Store application: ads in the Today tab, those displayed on the search page before the user enters a query, ads at the top of search results, and those located at the bottom of the files of other applications.
According to Apple, Search Ads allows developers to double impressions compared to organic search, with a particularly positive impact for small developers. This system works on a cost-per-click model, meaning developers only pay when their ad is clicked.
The expansion of Search Ads brings the reach of search ads to 91 countries in total. Here is the full list of new countries available today:
- Armenia
- Bahrain
- Bulgaria
- Cyprus
- Estonia
- Ghana
- Iraq
- Iceland
- Kenya
- Kyrgyzstan
- Latvia
- Luxembourg
- Morocco
- Mongolia
- Nepal
- Uzbekistan
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- Sri Lanka
- Türkiye
To be completely fair, developers in these regions were previously able to sign up for search ads to run campaigns displayed internationally. Now they can also target customers in their country, like Algeria or Morocco for example.
Remember that when they were launched two years ago, the advertisements were very poorly received by the developer community, in particular due to the display of advertisements for poor quality gambling games and casinos next to software unrelated professionals. In response, Apple temporarily paused serving certain categories of ads, such as those related to gambling, in these locations. This policy is still in effect, and Apple clarifies which advertising categories are restricted in these locations in its documentation.
This is what always distinguishes Apple from Google, ethics. But for how much longer?
In any case, dear readers from these countries, if you have local applications to discover, do not hesitate to let us know in the comments or by e-mail.
