The European Commission is launching a new investigation into Apple, the iPad and iPadOS. This time, it is support for third-party accessories that is targeted. The final response is expected in 2025 with possible new directives against Apple.
DMA: new investigation into Apple and iPadOS
The European Union is not done with Apple. From now on, it will focus on the subject of third-party accessories connected to the iPad via iPadOS. A new verification step carried out by the European Commission to ensure that iPadOS is 100% compliant with the DMA bill.
After choosing a default web browser other than Safari, the possibility of downloading applications via stores other than the App Store, uninstalling Apple’s default apps, gives way to the interoperability of third-party accessories. Headphones, styluses, trackers…
Once again, Apple must ensure that third-party accessories are not at a disadvantage compared to those of the brand. The system and ease of fitting must be identical, as well as access to software functionalities. In other words, the experience should be the same whether you use AirPods and an Apple Pencil or headphones and a stylus from other brands.
After so much effort has already been made in such a short time, it seems likely that Apple will play the defense card, justifying that everything is already in order. This will not prevent the Commission from investigating and producing its own report over several months. A final report expected in 2025. Next year already promises to be tough for Apple on the old continent.
In the event of an unfavorable judgment, Apple will be delivered a new document listing the expected changes. Non-negotiable changes which can lead to a fine of 10% of the company’s global turnover if they are not implemented on time.
