Default apps on iPhone
It is a feature that many users have been waiting for for a long time, especially those who prefer to use third party apps instead of those developed by Apple.
In iOS 18.2, users will find options to manage default apps in categories such as email, messaging, calls, call screening, browser, passwords and codes, and keyboards.

In the United States, for example, users can now select default apps for email, call screening, browser and passwords. However, the messaging and calling categories are still are limited to traditional options from Apple, such as Messages, FaceTime and Phone, but it is possible to choose between FaceTime or Phone as the default app for making calls.
The main difference is for users in the European Union. Apple is required to allow European users to choose third-party apps as default for features like messaging and calling, in addition to the categories mentioned above. This is due to the European regulations that require greater openness in the devices.
Additionally, European users will have the ability to delete some of the apps Apple’s main ones, such as Messages, App Store, Safari, Camera and Photos. This is an option that responds to the demands of European regulatory bodies who want consumers to have the freedom to choose the applications they prefer.
Greater control on iPhone
The arrival of this new section of default apps is just the first step towards greater flexibility in Apple’s closed ecosystem. According to the first impressions of those who have tested the beta, the change is being well receivedalthough there are still some limitations that the company hopes to solve in future updates.
It is expected that over time the default apps section will expand to include more options, such as managing contactless payments, an area where Apple has been very restrictive, limiting everything to Apple Pay.
Although it was thought that this feature would be exclusive to EU countries, Apple has decided to launch this functionality globally. This allows users from all over the world to benefit from greater personalization of their device. In the United States and other markets, the options are somewhat more limited, but users will still be able to choose their default apps.
With more options to choose and manage their favorite applications, iPhone users gain in customization and control about your digital experience.
