Sony would return to the fray in 2025 with the Xperia 1 VIII as a flagship and a second model in development, according to a recent leak. The first would incorporate the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5while the second terminal would be located in the mid-range, reinforcing a catalog that in recent years has been characterized by offering few, but very specialized models.
Although details are still scarce, the clues fit with previous moves by the brand: registrations of variants of the Xperia 1 VIII in eSIM databases and continued silence about the series Xperia 5which seems to move away from the product plan. If confirmed, 2025 would be the year of a single top of the range “1” and a new Xperia 10 who would take over in sales.
What has been leaked from the Xperia 1 VIII
The leak suggests that the Xperia 1 VIII will integrate the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 from Qualcomm, a SoC called to lead the Android of 2025 in CPU, GPU and AI capabilities. In parallel, references such as PM-1521-BV, PM-1522-BV and PM-1523-BV have appeared in eSIM compatibility lists, which suggests different regional versions of the device. There are no confirmed changes in the design, but, given the continuity between the Xperia 1 VI and 1 VIIa conservative approach can be expected with specific adjustments to the camera and screen.
The camera will continue to be one of the key aspects. Sony has maintained its commitment to its own sensors, continuous optical zoom and “Alpha” controls. If the chip jump is accompanied by improvements in processing and capture in low light conditions, 1 VIII could finally refine those areas where the most aggressive competition takes advantage.
What about the “other” Xperia? Clues of the next Xperia 10
The same leak talks about a second Xperia in development with several regional versions already registered, which points to the Xperia 10 VIII currently in preparation. The 10 range is Sony's volume pillar: low price, large battery and classic experiences from the house such as the 3.5 millimeter audio jack and the microSD. Between 2024 and 2025, in addition, the manufacturer has improved the pace of updates and on a more polished Android, so it would make sense to renew this model for the first half of the year.
All this reinforces the idea that there will be no successor of the Xperia 5 in the short term. The “5” family was for years the compact alternative to the flagship, but its gap has been narrowing as the “1” It has decreased in size and the range 10 has increased in performance. Reducing the line to two models (1 and 10) would simplify costs, marketing and support.
Sony's schedule and strategy for 2025

If the roadmap does not change, the logical thing would be to see the Xperia 1 VIII in spring and the new Xperia 10 in summerwith availability staggered by markets. Sony needs a clear and well-distributed launch to maintain the momentum it has gained with rapid updates and a very own product identity: 21:9 formatadvanced camera controls and an experience without unnecessary pre-installed apps (bloatware).
In short, a strategy focused on two models and clearer communication. Yeah 1 VIII delivers in performance and photography, and 10 VIII reinforces the mid-range with good updates and an adjusted price, 2025 may be the year in which Sony consolidates a simpler strategy… and easier to recommend.
