Google Play Store has begun to show visible notices in the tabs of certain Android applications that consume excessive battery in the background. The measure, announced at the end of last year, is now active: users will see a box with the message “this app may use more battery than expected due to high background activity.” Simple, direct and somewhat uncomfortable for affected developers.
The technical problem behind this is called partial wake lock– A mechanism that allows apps to maintain the processor running even with screen off and the user without interacting. Google recognizes that sometimes it is necessary, but there are apps that clearly abuse it, and that translates into worse autonomy without the user knowing very well why.
What changes for developers and users?
For developers, the pressure is real. In addition to the notice on the sheetGoogle had already warned that problematic apps could be left off its in-store recommendation lists, and losing visibility in the Play Store is a serious blow. According to the company, some have already started taking action since the policy was announced.
Users, for their part, benefit in two different periods. In the short term, they canavoid installing apps that will harm your autonomy. In the long run, if developers get their act together, the Android ecosystem in general should become more efficient. The notice, however, is quite generic: it does not give details of exactly how much the app consumes or under what conditions, which limits its practical usefulness.
It is a welcome measure, and possibly the most useful novelty in the Play Store since, in 2024, it was finally possible install multiple applications simultaneously. It remains to be seen if Google applies it rigorously or if it ends up being another notice that no one reads.
